Record rowing entry
The annual Estuary to Kerrs Reach handicap eights race to be rowed today has attracted a record 17. crews. The crews, which include six from the Canterbury club, will leave the start at the Pleasant Point Bridge at one-minute intervals. Avon’s premiers, who rowed the 7km course in just over 20min last year, should
again record the fastest time. Among the crew are Les O’Connell and George Keys, members of the national eight which won the world championship title on the Rotsee course in Lucerne, Switzerland, last August, and collectively took the “New Zealand Sportsman of the Year” award in Auckland this week. ■
