Clear-cut win for Nicholas John
NZPA-Reuter Melbourne The Perth Cup candidate, Nicholas John, picked up his expenses for his trip to Perth by easily winning the November Handicap at Kilmore on Thursday. Starting a hot favourite at 2-7, Nicholas John, ridden perfectly by the female apprentice, Tracey Linder, treated his inferior opponents with contempt winning by six lengths from the 10-1 chance. Sovereign Khan. Arlington Rocket (7-2) was a further half-head away in third placing. The win gave Linder her first winner in Australia since arriving from New Zealand in July.
Nicholas John, which carried 57.5 kg, will have his next start at Flemington in a 2600 m distance handicap on December 11. Then all going well he will be flown to Perth on December 16. His trainer, Colin Aiderson, was desperate to run the gelding on Thursday as there were no other races for him. “I didn’t want to have his races too close together, so for that reason I had to run him on Thursday,” Alderson said. Nicholas John, which has been rated as Australia’s most improved stayer, has won the 2600 m Metropolitan Handicap and the 2400 m Canberra Cup.
