Hard times for bookmakers
NZPA-Reuter London British bookmakers are suffering in the recession and the outlook for the rest of the racing industry is gloomy too. According to the Horserace Betting Levy Board, about 600 bookmakers have gone bankrupt in the last 18 months. Until the recession eases.
the amount betting could contribute to racing through the national levy must decline, the board said in its annual report. However, the tote itself improved its performance. In the year to March 31, it contributed £l.B million (SNZ4.I million) to racing and turned last year’s loss of £357,000 ($NZ806,820) into a £45,800 ($NZ103,508) profit.
