No U.S. pressure
Parliamentary reporter ’ The Government had not been under any pressure from the United States to reject the Law of the Sea convention, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, has told Parliament. Representatives of the United States had visited European capitals to put their case against the convention, Mr Cooper said, in reply to a question by Mr M. K. Moore (Labour, Papanui). New Zealand had not been subjected to that pressure. Mr Cooper said that he had not received any indication from the United States on whether it would observe the convention once it was in practice. It was hoped that the United States would agree to most of it except for the provisions on sea bed mining.
