Fence cut by vandals
Vandals have cut the fence surrounding Scott Park, Halswell. in several places. Someone had cut the fence with bolt-cutters a few days ago, Cr J. Y. Pethig has told a meeting of the Paparua County Council's reserves committee. The damage was mindless vandalism and a frustrating nuisance for the council staff who had to attend to “these stupid, little jobs,” he said. Repairs to the fence would not be expensive. A new joining link would be put in the parts that had been cut.
Motor-cycle area Mr Walls said that he was investigating the possibility of setting up a trust to lease and administer an area of McLeans Island for a proposed motor-cycle area. The trust would be run on behalf of all motor-cyclists, he said. He and the county engineer, Mr J. D. Annan, with representatives of other local authorities and various motor-cycle clubs, had attended a meeting at the North Canterbury Catchment
Board to look at possible sites. Club award The Wharenui Amateur Swimming Club had been selected as Canterbury regional winner of the Club of the Year Award made by the Council for Recreation and Sports, Mr P. Walls, the community recreation adviser, told the council in his monthly report. The club’s application would be sent to Wellington for final judging for the New Zealand title, he said.
