Wing commander to retire

One of the first pilots to serve in the Royal New Zealand Air Force Antarctic Flight will retire from the R.N.Z.A.F. this week after almost 30 years service.

He is Wing Commander W. J. Cranfield, who began his Air Force career as a Territorial in 1952, and- was stationed in the Antarctic in 1956 and again in 1959.

He became a flying instructor in 1955 and was posted to Wigram, where he later served as base adjutant. Wing Commander Cranfield flew Bristol freighters

on active service in Brunei and South Vietnam and later commanded 41 Squadron in Singapore.

He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1961.

A period as Director of Air Force Recruiting in . Wellington was followed by an appointment as commanding 3 Squadron at Auckland, and later officer com-

manding the Administration Wing, Auckland.

He will retire as senior air staff, officer at Support Group headquarters, Wigram.
