‘Sneaky’ bid defeated
PA Wellington The Government member for Invercargill, Mr N. P. H. Jones, succeeded in a latenight bid in Parliament on Wednesday to defeat what he said was a “sneaky” legislative bid to extend wholesale licensing hours to 9 p.m. Mr Jones put up a forceful argument against the Sale of
Liquor Amendment Bill’s provision. In a conscience vote, members voted on the voices .to throw the clause out. Mr. Jones argued that wholesale outlets would be able to open two hours longer than they do now. He said that because they had cheaper overheads they would gain an unfair advan-
tage over competitors through the longer hours. The House sat under urgency to pass the bill into law. All its stages were completed at 1.17 a.m. yesterday, about two hours after the debate began. The bill, which introduces a new licence to distribute wine, now awaits the Royal Assent.
