General forecast: A cold front is expected to move north-eastwards over the South Island during the day, preceded by strong to gale-force north-westerlies, followed by strong westerlies; in the west of the South Island, behind the front, the rain should ease to occasional showers; in the east, scattered rain is expected to spread east of the Main Divide north of about Timaru with the front, the weather otherwise fine; in the farsouth, it should be fine, apart from a few coastal showers.
