Honour for Holmes
NZPA-Reuter Mexico City The World Boxing Council (W.8.C.) yesterday named the heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes, boxer of the year for his successful title defence against a fellow American, Gerry Cooney. The W.B.C. also gave an honourable mention to the super-bantamweight champion, Wilfredo Gomez, of Puerto Rico, who has successfully defended titles 16 times in his career. ■ The welterweight champion, Sugat Ray Leonard, of the United States, who an-
nounced his retirement from boxing because of an eye injury this month, received the W.B.C.’s “personality of boxing” award. In its citation, the council said that Holmes’s win over Cooney in Las Vegas last June, his twelfth successful title defence and his fortieth win in 40 professional fights, ranked him among the greatest boxers of all- time. Eleven of the 12 title defences have been through knockouts, a record equalled only by Joe Louis who defended his title 25 times, it said.
