The top Sydney apprentice, Stephen Jeffries, arrived in Christchurch yesterday en route to Greymouth for the Greymouth Jockey Club's meeting this week-end. Jeffries, aged 19, was the winner of the Sydney premier apprentice championship for the 1981-82 season with a total of 54 wins. ...
Jeffries is indentured to the top Sydney trainer, Mel Barnes. Earlier in his career he was based-at Parks in western New South Wales with Barry Barnes, who is a son of Jeffries’s present employer and is also stable foreman for his father.
The youngster can ride at 49.5 kg and to date has three mounts booked for Saturday’s racing. They are Fraction Smart, West Virginia and Rutland's Pride.
Jeffries is expected to ride work at Riccarton this morning.
