Waitutu Forest

Sir,—The Director-General of Forests, Mr G. M. O’Neill, assures your correspondent, Elizabeth Davidson (November 23) and the public that the Forest Service has no plans to log in Waitutu State Forest at present. He also assures us that should any change in the status of this forest be considered in future years, it would not take place until proposals had first been published and public reaction sought. Similar assurances were given by the Forest Ser- ■ vice regarding the Big Bush area in the Nelson region yet they have, proceeded to clear fell the area in complete absence of any published management plan and before any scientific assessment of the area. The Forest Service has displayed a blatant disregard for any semblance of the democratic process and an arrogant desire to override the opinions or feelings of countless people in the. Nelson dis- -, trict. How than can we be expected to believe Mr O’Neill’s smooth assurances regarding Waitutu? -Yours, etc, MRS HEATHER E.DOCKERY.’.- • Nelson, ■ : ‘ ■ November 23, 1982.
