Lead in petrol
Sir,—The old Roman Empire fell because the people’s life expectancy dropped from about 60 years to . under 30 years because they put lead acetate into their ' wine to sweeten it. In the many centuries since, then, pewter mugs (made from tin and lead) and other things made from lead have made kings of some and idiots of others. N. J. Peet, senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury; asserts that it would cost money to reduce lead levels in petrol; I think it costs money to • put the lead into the . petrol in the first
place. It would be no trouble to invent a rearrangement of the present sparking system. There is no lead in dieselene. Lead is put into petrol because of the profit it makes, not becaue it is necessary. — Yours,- etc.,
