Tunnel accident admitted
NZPA Moscow Soviet and Afghan news agencies have acknowleged for the first time that there was a “road accident” ini a tunnel at the Salang Pass in northern Afghanistan “a few days ago” and that there was’ “loss of life.” The report by the Bakhtar news agency, which was carried by the Soviet news agency Tass, did not specify the number of casualties or the circumstances of the “accident.” However, it said that Western news reports about “acts of subversion” in the tunnel were “groundless.” Western sources of neighbouring Pakistan reported earlier this month that hundreds of Soviet soldiers and Afghan civilians died in a disaster at the tunnel 113 km north of the Afghan capital of Kabul.
