Borer beetle poses threat

NZPA, - Brisbane Queensland’s substantial pine forest plantations are threatened by a borer beetle discovered in state forests at Beerburrum, north .of Brisbane. The pine engraver beetle (Ips Grandicollis) from the United States was found last week in logs harvested from the 17,000 hectare Beerburrum Forest. The State Forestry Minister, Mr Bill Glasson, confirming the discovery yesterday, said that the beetle had caused extensive damage in the south-east of the United States and Europe and had been found in South Australia and Victoria. Government sources said that the discovery of the pine engraver beetle had caused some alarm in the department, although Mr Glasson said that there was no evidence at this stage of any damage to the plantations. The state’s softwood plantations, which cover more than 137,000 ha, are being checked by departmental entymologists for any further infestations. Mr Glasson said that the beetle had a short life cycle and could multiply and spread quickly.
