Big rise in freeze applications

PA Wellington Hardship applications to the Trade and Industry Department for exemptions from the price freeze showed a big rise in October, compared with September. Figures given by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, in Parliament yesterday showed that there were 197 applications in October. In the first four months of the freeze, the figures were 163, 117, 112, and 129 (September). Labour’s spokesman on consumer affairs, Mrs Ann Hercus (Lyttelton), asked Mr Templeton whether he would confirm the prediction in recent leaked Trade and Industry minutes that applications would increase.

Mr Templeton replied that he would like Parliament to judge the accuracy of Mrs Hercusfe. statement. He sug> gested that she should wait until the freeze had ended.
