More houses in green belt

Two more houses in Paparua County’s rural green belt have been approved by the Planning Tribunal after appeals against them by the Canterbury United Council. Mr D. S. McKenzie will be able to build a house in Cashmere Road, near the Christchurch City boundary, in conjunction with a business of breeding and grazing horses.

The tribunal said it was satisfied that a house was needed from an early stage of the business.

In .a second case, the tribunal approved a Paparua County Council decision to allow a house in Berketts Road, Weedons. Dr A. St

John, who has been appointed as senior medical officer at Burnham Military Camp, is one of the applicants.

He would also practise at the Lincoln medical centre. The property would be used for the production of wool and fat lambs, and the grazing of five horses. Dr St John had long been active in small farming and the administration of pony clubs.

Production on the property could result in a gross profit of $2OOO, which would be about twice the return which could be expected from using the property for dry land farming.
