Tax avoidance

Sir,—James R. Simmonds (November 15) I am sure voices the silent majority in congratulating you on your tax avoidance feature (“The Press,” November 11). It is time this way of robbing the poor to featherbed the rich was exposed before it wrecks our society. Budget cuts favour the best off, but hit the part-timer, often a woman trying to help cope with rising local body rates and mortgage interest. Inflation proof bonds take money from production and are a tax on the ordinary person to protect the capital assets of a privileged group. Fortunately that bonanza seems over; but we can expect a run on calls for repayment on maturity, the same as the trading banks are getting now on fixed deposits. This is curtailing overdrafts to small businesses just when they need tfiem. We badly need a fair tax system and' a fair vote. National and Labour have given us neither. Both had plenty of opportunity, so try the only alternative. — Yours, etc., A. M. COATES. November 16, 1982.
