Gebbies Pass hill-climb
The Gebbies Pass section of the Summit Road will be busy on Sunday, but some drivers will not have time to enjoy the spectacular views as they wind up the hill — they will be competing in the Canterbury regional round of the national hill-climb championship. About 35 drivers from Canterbury and South Canterbury will tackle the tricky I.4km section of sealed road. Cliff Pilling is expected to do well, as his powerful Chev Camaro should be suited to
the steep hill, and Dave Hudson could also score well in his Torana XUI for the same reason. Other top competitors in the Stan Wheatley Gold Star event include Merv Rowe (Lotus 7), Garry Cliff (Datsun 1200 SSS) and John Taylor (Co’rtina 1500). The rally organiser. Bryan Hessey, said yesterday that Summit Road sightseers may experience some hold-ups because of the hill-climb but there would be provision to let sightseers up and down the hill between runs.
