Obituary Monsignor Leo Downey

PA Auckland Monsignor Leo Downey, who was awarded the M.B.E. in 1960 for his work in prisons, died in Auckland on Monday. He was 66. Mr Downey was director of Catholic Social Services for 20 years before being appointed senior chaplain to the Justice Department, a post which involved nine years work as chaplain in Auckland prisons. He was born in Rotorua

and had his early education at St Joseph’s Convent. Rotorua, and Sacred Heart College, Auckland. He studied for the priesthood in Australia and Italy and was ordained in 1940. Prison work took up most of his time in the 1950 s and 1960 s but he still remained interested in social services. He was appointed to the Government Advisory Board on marriage guidance in 1960 and was Dominion president

of the Society for the Protection of Home and Family during that time. At the time of his death. Mr Downey was parish priest of St Joseph's parish. Orakei. He was a former parish priest of St John's. Parnell. and St Michael's. Remuera. His funeral will follow a Requiem Mass to be celebrated at St Patrick's Cathedral at 2 p.m. today.
