Good sales for all prime stock

AU classes of prime stock had a satisfactory sale at the Addington market vesterdav.

The smallest yarding of prime cattle for five weeks caused a slight improvement in cattle values, the first rise since the middle of Seplember. Prime lamb and hogget prices remained firm. Recent rain has boosted the confidence of farmers and this was reflected in the store sheep and cattle pens where demand for stock was strong.

There was no Addington market on Tuesday because of a public holiday bn Monday. The index on the front page of “The Press" yesterday incorrectly advised that there was a market report inside the newspaper. Spring Lambs Demand from butchers for spring lambs remained strong. The top lambs exceeded $2B and manv sales were around $23.'

Small lambs sold down to $15.80. but over-all values remained steady. The yarding totalled 225, compared with 386 last week. Values were:— Heavy lambs, to $28.60. Medium lambs. $2l to $24. Light lambs. $15.80 to $20.50.

Quality was generally good although' several lines of light hoggets were bought as stores. Exceptional hoggets made more than $2B.

The quality of -old ewes was described as very good with few plain ewes offered. More good cutting ewes were available than last week.

Although the sale fluctuated, values for old ewes finished fully firm on last week's rates. Four-tooth ewes were in stronger demand and improved by $2 a head.

Cattle prices stopped the downwards slide which had occurred during the last few weeks Prices yesterday 'showed a slight improvement with heavy cattle having the best of the market. The firmer sale was attributed to the smaller number yarded. 207 compared with 346 last week.

The offering included a big proportion of cows which had a reasonable sale.

Top price was $834 each for two Friesian steers sold on account of J. S. Dalgety (West Melton). An Angus-Hereford heifer from Bountiful Farm (Styx) made $440 and a Shorthorn cow was sold by R. E. and J. Y. Winterburn (Chorlton) for $358.

Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold for between 161 c and 165 c a kilogram, between 220 kg and 270 kg. from 161 c to 165 c and over 270 kg. to 164 c. Values were:— Prime heavy steers, to $530, with odd sales to $834. Prime medium steers. $370 to $450. Prime light steers. $285 to $350. Prime heavy heifers, to $440. Store Sheep The recent rain caused a lift in store sheep prices and a big gallery followed the sale. Several pens of spring-born lambs were offered, with the tops exceeding $l6. Other good lambs sold from $l2 to $l4. Prices for wether hoggets firmed throughout the sale. Hoggets with plenty of wool were in demand and made to $17.80 with other medium hoggets selling from $l3 to $l6. Shorn ewes with lambs at foot were more difficult to sell. Store Pigs A bigger number of weaners was yarded than in recent sales, but fewer large stores were 1 offered. . All pigs had a harder sale and only the very best quality stores made more than $BO. Best weaners were still keenly sought after. In-pig sows also had a difficult sale and the best made to $215. Values-were:— Small weaners, $25 to $32. Good weaners. $35 to $42.
