Complaint against council

PA Auckland The Race Relations Office will investigate a complaint against the East Coast Bays Citv Council.

Mr Kuipers von Lande has complained to the office about a statement relating to aim in the minutes of the council’s legal, finance, and aolicy committee meeting in March. He said that the statement vas likely to incite racial iisharmon'y and ill-will against him on the grounds af his origin.

The statement said “. . . foreigner gentleman who perhaps did not know the laws of this country.” The Town Clerk of East Coast Bays, Mr P. J. Bell, said the statement related to an incident early in the year when a group of people had broken a by-law relating to the use of loud-hailers in a street.

The committee, which had to consider the matter after getting complaints from residents, had decided not to prosecute. Mr Bell said he believed that Mr von Lande was part of the group.

The Race Relations Office has advised that it intends to investigate the matter.
