Contract for dam

Sir,—Can we justify allowing a German consortium to come to New Zealand to build a dam we have the expertise to construct more economically and keep the $lO6 million in New Zealand. In two world wars within the last 60 years we have fought the Germans to protect our freedom. Victory was won at a great cost, and to us, the survivors, was bequeathed the responsibility to protect our country from further invasions. Why are we employing a small German company which cannot expand in Germany or secure such a contract in its own country or in fact in Europe with their recession. All New Zealanders, including family members, ancestors and friends may well have died in vain if such a short time afterwards we allow the roles of the countries to be reversed when the Germans may become our masters economically if the dam proceeds.—Yours. etc., BILL HUGHES. October 18, 1982.
