Jail for shooting

PA Auckland A Manurewa man who fired a stolen shotgun twice in an Otara wine shop was sentenced in the District Court at Otahuhu to two years and a half jail. . Robert Hphepa, aged 43, a labourer, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing the shotgun, valued at $2OO, and one of discharging a shotgun with reckless disregard for the safety of others. Judge Duncan sentenced Hohepa to two years and a half jail on the charge of discharging the shotgun, and one year for stealing it, the

At an earlier hearing, Sergeant P. A. Smith told the Court that on October 6 the manager of the wine shop went to get a flagon of lemon gin for Hohepa and returned to find a doublebarrelled shotgun pointed at him.

A shot passed within three feet of the manager and hit a rear wall of the shop office. Hohepa, it was said, had fired a second shot at the front window, shattering wine bottles and spraying shot and glass over the footpath.
