53 laid off at Wanganui
PA Wellington Fifty-three workers have been given dismissal notices at a Wanganui women’s clothing factory. The company, Wanganui Textiles Overseas Traders, Ltd, which has its headquarters at Levin, cited a lack of forward orders and a downturn in trading for the layoffs. It is retaining 31 of its Wanganui staff. The secretary of the Wellington Clothing ‘ Workers’ Union, Mr Frank Thorn, said
many women workers had broken down weeping when given the news. Mr Thorn said it was the biggest single staff lay-off in the Wellington region. He said 25 workers had been transferred by the company from Marton to the Wanganui factory about three months ago. Of the 53 dismissed, 22 will receive no redundancy pay because they have been with the company less than a year.
