Maori conch shell trumpet fetches $2000
PA Auckland A rare Maori conch shell trumpet was sold for $2OOO at an auction in Auckland. It is thought the trumpet originally came from Taranaki and was brought to the Bay of Plenty by Chief Kereopa to rally local Maoris to war. The Whakatane Museum had expressed interest in obtaining the trumpet, because of its historical, significance. The acting director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Mr David Simrilons,
declined to say whether a joint bid by his museum and the Whakatane Museum had been successful. The auctioneer. McArthur and Company, could only confirm that the trumpet had gone to a New Zealand buyer and would be on public display. Two other notable New Zealand works came under the hammer, a Goldie painting, which fetched $25,000, and a detailed water-colour by Charles Heaphy of a plan of Auckland which was„,§old to an Australian, buyer Tor $12,000;.
