Booth Shield to Nelson
PA Nelson Nelson's junior golfers put paid to northern hopes when they convincingly won the Booth Shield, on home territory yesterday. The trophy, for junior provincial golf teams; has been held by Wellington for the last two years but this year the capital team could do no better than seventh place. Districts may enter up to six players of each sex for the Booth Shield, with the best seven net scores counting in each of the three rounds. Marlborough, which led after the first 18 holes, was second, with Waikato third. The individual gross trophy was won by Nelson's Tasman Freyberg number one and former Canterbury player. Stephen Street. He had rounds of 71, 73. and 75, to head off Perry Meehan, of Waikato by six strokes. The Nelson international, Debbie Randell," was a clear leader in the girls’ gross with rounds of 77, 76. and 75. She
beat Shelley Duncan. Otago, by eight strokes. • The boys' over-all net went to John Herd of Otago with an aggregate 210. Neil Pratt of Waikato was two strokes behind.' Tania Kiwara - from Hawke’s Bay took the girls' net with 213. Sharon Bilton. Canterbury, was second with 214. Julie Vining from the Nelson A team, carded a nineunder 64 in the second round to take the girls' individual net, and Poverty Bay’s Simon Niblock took the boys' title with a 65. In the inter-island event played in conjunction, the South Island had its first win since 1976. Only four strokes separated the teams of six boys and six girls. Final scores: Nelson A. 1515. 1; Marlborough. 1538. 2; Waikato, 1555. 3; Otago. 1563, 4; Nelson B, 1569, 5; Canterbury. 1571. 6; Wellington, 1572. 7; Hawke’s Bay. 1575, 8: Poverty Bay, 1578. 9: Taranaki 1609. 10.
