Board to discuss unsuccessful tour
NZPA Melbourne The Australian Cricket Board’s executive committee will meet next month to consider Australia’s incidentwracked and unsuccessful tour of Pakistan. But no immediate action was likely, said the board’s executive director, David Richards, yesterday. “I know you’re probably going to ask me ‘what will we do about rocks being thrown at Australian players?’ but it is impossible to say what might happen until we’ve considered the reports,” he said. The tour manager, Col Egar, is due to present a report on the tour — in which Australia went without a win in one-day, provincial or test matches — to the board in the next few weeks. “The manager has the responsibility to provide a full
report on the tour, and normally the captain has something to say in association with that,” Mr Richards said. The executive committee was due to meet in midNovember, with the report on its agenda, and that meeting could decide if any action will follow. The board also has to name Australia’s captain for the first Ashes test against England, which starts in Perth on November 12. At its recent annual meeting in Melbourne, the board decided not to vary the system of having the board appoint a captain, although selectors decide the rest of the team.
Kim Hughes, who led the Australian side in Pakistan, has called for the Australian captain to be a full-time official. He has said he would like to captain Australia against England this year.
