England crushed
NZPA Brisbane Queensland scored its first win over England in more than 50 years when it crushed the tourists by 171 runs in their opening match at the Brisbane Cricket Ground yesterday. Queensland cruised to victory when England's second innings folded for a disappointing 189 on the fourth and final day, its last five wickets adding only 26 runs. But Queensland and the likely Australian captain, Greg Chappell, warned the test victories would not come so easily. “Today’s defeat was embarrassing for England, nothing more. The result has no real significance on the outcome of the tests,” he said. Australia meets England in the first of five tests starting in Perth on November 12. Yesterday England was set 361 runs to win but its second innings lasted only
233 minutes with Queensland’s part-time spinner, Brett Henschell, taking five for 60 from 18.1 overs. England's captain. Bob Willis, said his batsmen had let. an ideal opportunity for solid practice on a good pitch slip away at a vital stage of the tour. “The harsh words have been said,” Willis said later. The England innings started badly for the second time in the match when the possible test opener' Graeme Fowler, lasted only two balls QUEENSLAND First innings 297/9 dec. Second innings K. Wessels c.
