Rebels win first match
NZPA Johannesburg The rebel Sri Lankan cricketers won their opening one-day warm-up match in Johannesburg yesterday, beating an invitation 11 by 107 runs. The Sri Lankans scored 302 for six from their quota of 50 overs, Nirmal Hettiaratchy hitting a top score of 89. The invitation 11, including some veteran South Africans, were all out for 195. The rebels begin their first full fixture against Transvaal province in Pretoria tomorrow.
Bandula Warnapura. the captain of the Sri Lankan side who did not play yesterday, said afterwards: “The team really needed this game to give us some match practice and help us get acclimatised.” Hettiaratchy’s 89 included 15 fours. Other major contributors were Anura Ranasinghe with 85 and Flavian Aponso 54. A former Australian test player, Graham McKenzie, was the invitation side’s most successful bowler with three for 60 from his 10 overs.
