Lucky escape for apprentices

From

J. J. BOYLE

Wellington Three apprentices were lucky to escape serious injury in a pile-up close to the post in the Rimutaka Handicap, first leg of the Wellington Racing Club’s T.A.B. treble yesterday. The win favourite, Atrapar, was running erratically in the middle of the track and he veered sharply to collide with Just One Time. Both horses fell in the path of Crepe, which also came down. The young riders, Rodney Lowry (Atrapar), Bruce Beamsley (Just One Time) and Dion Ramsay (Crepe),

were thrown heavily and lay still as ambulance men and course staff rushed to their assistance. After a few minutes Lowry and Beamsley were able to walk the short distance to the birdcage unassisted, but Ramsay was carried back to a stretcher and sent to hospital for observation. An inquiry was opened into the incident and questions were asked about Atrapar’s erratic style of running. If he does not perform satisfactorily when tried before a stipendiary steward on the training track his future in racing might be in doubt.
