Stylish win ends Volare’s natch of bad luck

From

J. J. BOYLE

Wellington Volare shook himself clear of a patch of bad luck to win the Wellington Racing club’s Harcourt Stakes at Trentham yesterday. He won in style by three lengths, and assured himself of a start in next Saturday’s Rotorua Cup, in which he will be ridden by Nigel Tiley. Volare, a smallish chestnut son of Avaray had given his connections some frustrating days at Trentham before yesterday. He was one of the top

fancies in a Douro Cup but was out of contention right from the start after dropping his rider in the starting gate as the field was sent away. In two earlier starts at this meeting he met with trouble in the running. Earlier this spring the Awapuni trainer, Malcolm Smith, was planning to take him to Sydney for the Epsom Handicap, but a mud rash put an end to that. Yesterday’s win in a historic weight-for-age race certainly offered some compensation for his owners Messrs Ron Chitty, K. W.

Irwin, R. W. Menzies and Don Pinfold. Volare was bred by Mr Owen Mitchell from the Bold Lad mare, Boldetta, which has since been sold to Australia at a record price for a mixed sale at Trentham. Volare has now won six races. Another historic race on his records is the Ormond Memorial. Volare was Reveillia’s best backed rival yesterday and it was clear before the home turn that the three-year-old was finding it a hard slog on a rain affected track. Noel Harris did not ask Volare for much in the

handy-sized field until he steered him towards the middle of the track early in the run home. When he sent him in chase of Drummer Boy, Tiley’s mount on this occasion, the race soon ceased to be a contest in earnest. Johnny Sunrise, one of the outsiders of the field, cut Drummer Boy out of second close to the end, but none of the others offered encouragement for their backers. Reveillia came in fourth but in a gap of two and a half lengths. El Pedro was a well beaten sixth.
