Civic pride
Sir,—Christchurch is a city steeped in Anglo-Saxon tradition, reno ted for its garden city image ad hospitality. But
it is a city that needs to improve its sanitation services, whether that be in its comfort stops around the city or in its streets, malls, roadsides and paths, parks, rivers and beaches. Our comfort stops are not all twentieth-century and are marked by the ravages of time, mischief and the false image bestowed on sanitation teams. I believe that image is capable of a higher rating and like its compatriot, streetsweeping, no easy task in a “throw away, don’t care” society. Work’attitudes in public start at the bottom and top and work towards the centre. Civic pride, like a city’s heart and vitality, is Christchurch whether you are a public or private worker, ratepayer, tourist or resident. We. need more civic pride and less “throw away, don't cares.’’— Yours, etc.. GRAEME STANLEY. October 22, 1982.
