Bells mark U.N. day
The bells of Christchurch Cathedral were rung for 50 minutes yesterday to mark United Nations’ Charter Day.
Bell-ringers throughout the United States and in other countries recognised the event in the same way. It was remarked in the "Ringing World" the weekly journal for bell-ringers, that it was "a particularly appropriate" plea for peace. Bells originated as a “metal on metal" charm to ward off evil. .
Eight bells were rung in Christchurch to affirm a common desire for peace.
