PA Rotorua John Rix of Auckland won the men’s title at the New Zealand orienteering championships at Kawerau on Saturday. He-was just lmin 49s ahead of David Miller, the former Australian champion. Rix’s time was Ihr 14min 20s. Kevin Ireland of Waikato was third, and the former New Zealand champion. Ross Brighouse of South Auckland, was fourth.
First home in the women’s championship was a late entry. Anne Salisbury from Britain, in lhr 3min 18s. She was not eligible for the title or trophy, which went to Patricia Aspin of South Auckland, who finished in lhr 6min Is. Cathy Hatwell of South Auckland was third. A record number of competitors, 390, took part in the championships, held in the Tarawera Forest.
