Tiley will ride Firefly at Trentham today

BOYLE Wellington The successful Takanini jockey, Nigel Tiley. will ride the Riccarton-trai'ned Firefly in the $20,000 Wellington Handicap, first. leg of the T.A.B. double at Trentham today. Firefly travelled well in the care of her trainer. Ned Thistoll. last Thursday, and on her form this season and her best form of other seasons she should offer stiff opposition to the best of the northerners.

After winning the Dunedin and Waikouaiti Cups last season Firefly failed at 3200 m in the Wellington Cup. but her worth at 2200 m is the matter to consider today, and the six-year-old could leave her stamp of quality on the race.

She will carry 52.5 kg. substantial relief on the weights she carried into minor placings at her last two starts, both of them at Orari. Form from the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting nine days ago will probably do most to shape favouritism for today's race. Claymore Boy under brilliant handling from Jim Cassidy won that race handily under 51.5 and has 54.5 today. Speculation (third) and Langeland (fourth) are also engaged again — of the two Langeland might find most improvement from his last run..

He led briefly in the straight but lost it when he shifted ground, making it impossible for Maurice Campbell to ride him right out.

That fourth represented a sharp improvement on his performance the time before at Matamata, and if Langeland can find matching improvement going into today's race the others will be hard pressed to match him. Double Trouble, an expensive sixth on the first day of the meeting, is another capable of finding some improvement. From No. 2 in the starting gate he should get early cover in the field and settle to a more relaxed style of running then he did last Saturday week. Il Vento will be a popular fancy for the Nainai Handicap, second leg of today's T.A.B. double. His first win for the season from Malcolm’s Smith’s Awapuni stable did not look far distant when he ran third behind Commissionaire in the $20,000 Metric Mile Handicap on Saturday. The class represented in that field was clearly superior to that offered by the 1200 m sprinters on the same programme. However, Lens won that sprint in style by three lengths and a half and has shown he is capable as well at 1400 m.

Sweet Nell, a battling second behind Lens on Saturday, and the Ivil-trained King's Royal, a promising fourth fresh up at Waverley, are others with well regarded chances. Selections 11.40: Gabriella.
