Chathams scout den built

Chatham Island , scouts now have their first permanent den. thanks to the efforts of Christchurch students and the New Zealand Lottery Board. Six students and a tutor of the Christchurch Polytechnic building school flew to the Chathams earlier this year to work alongside local volunteers in erecting the island's first scout den. Their air fares were paid for by a $2OOO Lottery Board grant from the youth services distribution committee. About $16,000 was contributed by Chathams residents towards the cost of the building. A lack of skilled building tradesmen on the Chathams first prompted the call for help to the member of Parliament for Lyttelton. Mrs Ann Hercus. and her husband. Mr John Hercus. the Polytechnic’s director, to assist by sending a- student work-force. Before the new scout den was erected, the island's scouts met in a derelict farm building which was not equipped with electricity.
