Meat industry delegation in Algeria
PA . Wellington A meat industry delegation is visiting Algeria to organise a lamb contract for the new season. Algeria bought 3000 tonnes of lamb earlier this year for about $7 million. The last deliveries are now being made. The team is Mr Mervyn Barnett, a member of the Meat Board, and Mr Brian Freeman, marketing manager of Borthwicks. “The board hopes that a further sale will be arranged, but any figures are speculative at this stage,” a board spokesman has said. The sale is expected to be well under 10,000 tonnes. Algeria bought New Zealand lamb for the first time in 1981. when it took 2000 tonnes. Early this year it signed a three-year supply agreement with the board, with volumes and prices to be negotiated.
