Fine wool price firm

PA Dunedin In a Dunedin sale dominated by the fine wools yesterday prices were generally, firm and in seller’s favour. Merino made up 12 per cent of the 33,000-bale offering, Halfbred and Corriedale 46 per cent, and the balance crossbred and oddments. Compared with the Christchurch sale on October 1, fine Merino fleece was in buyers’ favour, and strong Merino in sellers’ favour. All other fine wools were firm or up to 2.5 per cent dearer. Crossbred fleece was generally unchanged, and skirtings, oddments and crutchings 2.5 per cent deafer. The official report said that some exceptional lines were offered. These included four bales of super fine Merino hogget from Mount Otekajke station, Duntroon, which made the top price for the sale at 624 c a kilogram. Many lines were dusty and short in the staple. Wool without dust had good colour and yielded well. Main competition came from China, Japari, and Western Europe, supported by New Zealand mills. The Wool Board bid on

about 20 per cent of the offering and bought about 2.5 p.er cent. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 256.27 c a kilogram. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 24.9 per cent will apply to all wool sold at the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight on October 13 to midnight on October 14.
