Car market
Sir, — I am amused at the reports in the media these days of over-production at our New Zealand car assembly shops. About 1948 I tried to get a new car; my name was put on the list of a large Christchurch franchise holder. After quite a few trips and telephone calls (over a period of several months) I was told that they would ring me. Somewhat deflated I placed an order with the dealers of my second choice and was also placed on the “list”. I was told it was well down and “of course there were priorities such as doctors and taxis to be looked after, but I would hear from them in due course.” That was in 1950. Did,l ever hear from either? No. So I am now laughing
because I no longer need a new car. I wonder how many buyers of that period were placed in a similar position? — Yours, etc., G. A. URRY. October 14, 1982.
