Compensation change ‘legalised theft’
An amendment to the Accident Compensation Act would be legalised theft, said the national president of the Fire Brigades' Federation. Mr G. G. Walker. "The new amendment and consolidation act intends to take away or substantially water down many of the current benefits." tie said. The October 15 deadline for submissions was too early. “How we can possibly prepare effective submissions between then and now is
impossible to comprehend." said Mr Walker. The proposed amendment confirmed fears expressed before the act was passed. “A group of Christchurch trade union officials and lawyers gave a clear warning that if unions agree to it, the benefits which were being promised would be taken away in later years. "We were assured by Sir Thomas Skinner and Messrs Jim Knox and Bill Andersen that such would not happen." he said.
