Melbourne Popular Alm showed he is definitely world-class material with a sensational win in the $50,000 Winfield Cup at Moonee Valley on Saturday evening. The Kilmore-trained pacer spreadeagied.the best horses in Australia to win as he liked by 20 metres, smashing the traek and class record on his way . Popular Alm ran the 2400 m in a scintillating 2min 57.35. which represents a mile rate of Imin 58.95. The six-year-old’s victory time clipped I.ls off the former champion Brad Adios’s time of 2min. “I think he’s finally shown he’s the best horse in Australia." said driver Vin
Knight, who went even further in his admiration for the bay when he said: “He might even be the best in the world.” New Zealanders are likely to see Popular Alm in action at the Auckland InterDominion Pacing Championships at Alexandra Park in March. Popular Aim’s victory took his stake earnings to $150,242 from 21 wins. Gammaiite. which has failed to recapture his brilliant form of last season, onlyplodded into fourth place, a long way behind Popular Alm. The N.S.W. stars, Jikk Adios and Gundary Flyer, failed to flatter and finished fifth and sixth respectively.
