Ninth win for Remote
Special correspondent Dunedin
Remote, bought for $6OO as a yearling, gained her ninth win and boosted her stake earnings to $40,365, with success in the Big Softie Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday evening. The seven-year-old daughter of Gaines Minbar will race next at the Auckland meeting on October 19 and 23. •
"She is not so good from a stand and she can race in a $20,000 mobile race at Auckland. rather than start against some of the top pacers in a standing start free-for-all on the second night at Forbury," said Murray Rennie, who trains Remote at- Ohoka.
The 28-year-old Rennie has now prepared 30 winners in just under three years as a professional trainer and has trained Remote for eight of her wins. She was prepared for her first win by Dale Cameron at Wyndham. “I was quite surprised the way she went away. She had a wee canter. We have shortened her gear right up this season and she is a lot better.” said Rennie.
Remote is the first racing venture for Campbell Graham, a Balclutha dentist, his wife Jan, and Bill Johnston, of Christchurch, and formerly of Balclutha. The Grahams and Mr Johnston decided to buy a horse when they had adjoining properties. They set a
limit of $BOO on their purchase and Mr Johnston bought her out of the Southland sale ring. She was from the first crop of Gaines Minbar out of the unraced mare, Mini Clare, by Armbro Del from Lucky Surprise, by Lucky Hanover, a, background that did not inspire bidding. Speedy Girl (North Island Oaks) and Minilima (New Zealand Oaks) were from the same crop of Gaines Minbar. Remote had not been successful since the Wellington meeting in March. She was one of the busiest pacers to race last season, starting 36 times, recording three wins and 12 placings for $18,450. She has now had 84 starts for nine wins and 34 placings. Back in ninth place when the field settled. Remote improved three wide at the 1000 m and headed the tiring pacemaker, Betty Adios, 500 metres from the finish.
She stayed on well to win' by three-quarters of a length from The Sting, who trailed, three places back then moved off the fence at the 1100 m. Vita Man was not disgraced when third. He was slow away and went round the field to be second at the 500 m. Sweet Jessica made a good impression in her first race for six months when she came from well back for fourth.
Enterprise did well for fifth, along with Zabadak. which met trouble near the IOOOm when Fouroux was checked and tangled..
