Impressive win by Black Rule
PA. Invercargill Black Rule, an impressive last start winner at Wingatui. confirmed the worth of that success when he unwound a storming late claim to win the Winton Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Winton Jockey Club's spring meeting at Invercargill on Saturday. Black Rule's victory gave his trainer, Pat Corboy, of Washdyke, his twelfth success of the season. Settled back in the field. Black Rule lodged his claim four wide on the home turn and over the final 100 m he never flinched. He won going away by a length and a quarter to score clearly onhis merits. Good Way, another Canterbury challenger, was far ■ from disgraced in finishing second. He challenged three wide on the home turn but had no answer to the
winner's dashing late claim. The lightweight, Ribolass. was a gallant third. Dig In, launched his four-year-old campaign on a successful note when he won the Radio Southland Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Even though his winning margin was only half a neck, he gave his army of supporters no cause for concern. Jim Collett plotted an economical passage just behind the leaders on the rails, and had him out and attacking at the straight entrance. The front-running Peck did not give it away lightly, but Dig In always had her measure and won convincingly enough by half a neck. Albatross began ner six-year-old campaign on a promising note in finishing third, a length away. She was always in close touch, and rallied solidly.
