Harbour sediment to be studied
Sedimentation in Lyttelton harbour will be under scrutiny for the next three years. The Harbour Board decided last week to pay a student at the University of Canterbury nearly $16,500 to study sediment buildup and distribution at port. Mr R, Curtis, who is studying for his doctorate, will report his findings to the board. The study is due to finish in November, 1985. Mr J. B. Bushell, the chief engineer, told the board that sedimentation and the consequent dredging was its biggest spending item. Cost saving could be made by improving dredging and dumping efficiency. Board members decided to' foot the bill for the study, which would be the same as a’ University Grants Commitee scholarship. 1 Port watchers will again see I the orange colours of the Coastal ; Trader today. She could not : make her usual two calls to port I last week because of mechanical i trouble. One of her turbo-chargers | broke down in Auckland last ■ week-end and the week's sailings I were cancelled to allow time for | repairs.
