Week-end cycling results

The week-end's cycle racing was very important to many Canterbury cyclists as it was their last competition before they participate in the Healing New Zealand Road Cycling Championships in Wellington next week-end. On Saturday, the annual "Papanui Classic" was held over an 85km course from Eyretoh, along Tram Road to Oxford, down German Road, through Summerhill. Cust, then back on to Tram Road to finish at Eyreton. The scratch markers' plight looked hopeless as they were chasing 23 minutes to the front bunch, but a strong northwesterly wind increased their chances. The front markers rode steadily into the head wind and still held a handy advantage when they turned into the tail wind and headed for the finish. Two riders contested the sprint for first place, but Les Fibbins fought on too strongly for his co-marker Geoff Bushnell, to win comfortably. A further three minutes back came a bunch of four riders led by Scott Hindmarsh, followed by Robert Forrest, Don Johnston, and Jack Hill.

The scratch sprint was won easily by Greg Fraine from Paul Miller and Glen Fuller, but at the presentation Fraine declined the fastest time prize as he had Etured and was motor-paced up to his bunch. Yesterday; the PennyfarthingTown Hall Criteriums held on the smallest possible block around the Town Hall. The 30 lap (20km) Amateur "B" grade race was won by Scott Hindmarsh who, by winning the final sprint and so taking the double points, held a seven-point advantage over Craig Fenton, with Brian Robertson taking third place. Andrew Macßeth showed good form in winning the 24-lap (16km) Novice criterium from Ross Brimer who won the final sprint and Richard Bruce. Phillip Gibbs, one of the favourites for this race, crashed in the third to last lap and retired. A crash haltway ttirougn the 60 lap (40km) amateur “A" grade race brought down half the field of riders, most of whom withdrew. leaving only six riders to contest the final 8 sprints. Paul Miller, one of the riders 'who crashed, used the two laps allowed to recover and went bn to win by 21 points from Jamie
