Opossum skinning contest finalists

Greyrnouth reporter The annual opossum skin ning contest held at Moana on Saturday was supported by a display of opossum fur products, and ended with a dance. The three fastest skinners proved to be Pat Walker (Reeftonl. Geoffrey Jacobs (Ikamatua). and Artie Grant (Nelson), who will now go on to the New Zealand championship at Dunedin on October 23.

The other three South Island competitors were to have been chosen in a contest at Wyndham at the week-end. and the full South Island team will compete with six North Islanders. Mr "Crockett" Norton will leave for Dunedin tomorrow to prepare for the New Zealand championships. Being confined to a wheelchair has proved no obstruction to him in his organisation work, or in his job as a skin buyer. He is at present arranging for about 200 opossums to be made available for Dunedin, which has attracted $5OOO in prizes plus two trail bikes. Mr Norton will be clearly identifiable at the New Zealand contest, which he wili preside over as referee. At the dance on Saturday he was presented with a Davy Crockett-stvle fur hat, which

he said he would wear at Dunedin. “It is going to be added to the rules," he said.
