Egypt and N.Z.

Sir,—On September 29, a news item from an NZPA staff correspondent in Cairo was printed in “The Press.” It concerned a theory, attributed to the eminent scientist Dr Barry

Fell, emeritus professor of Harvard University, that Maui sailed from Egypt' before fishing up the North Island of New Zealand from the sea. The NZPA correspondent proceeded to examine the attitude of the academic world to this strange theory. It should be unnecessary to say that Fell propounded no such theory, so that the Egyptian professor’s comments are completely irrelevant. It is true that no Egyptian university is showing any interest in Fell’s researches, unlike those in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Possibly if the University of Cairo replaced your “leading Egyptoplogist” with someone else, the position might be remedied. Readers interested in Maori-Libyan links are advised to consult the Epigraphic Society Publications held by the University of Canterbury. — Yours, etc.,

T. M. RYAN. October 7, 1982,
