Crown lakeweed causes concern

Wellington reporter The continuing problem of lakeweed in some Crown-owned-lakes is causing concern. as is the time it is taking to remedy it. The Lands and' Survey Department has been seeking approval for some time to do much more lakeweed control work. In 1980, the department made comprehensive suggestions on lakeweed in a new policy initiative. The suggestions were declined by the Government as being too expensive. The Gazette of February 18, 1982, listed six species as Class B noxious plants under

the Noxious Plants Act. f 1978—Salvina molesta, La- ■ garosiphon major (oxygenweed), Egeria densa (Elb- ; dea densa), Vallisneria gigantea (eelgrass), Hydrilla verti- • cillata (hydrilla) and ' Ceratophyllum demersum > (hornewort). I This means that the seeds, plants and parts of those : plants may not be propagated. planted, sown, offered ' for sale, sold or distributed ■ without the consent in writ- ‘ ing of the Noxious Plants > Council. This notice became effec- ’ tive from February 19. It is ; considered too early to tell if • it has been effective.
