Games rehearsal
By ROD DEW, from Brisbane Some 15,000 spectators streamed into the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stadium to watch an unpublicised dress rehearsal of the XII Commonwealth Games opening ceremony yesterday. - "Only friends and relatives of schoolchildren taking part were invited, and entry was to have been by showing ‘a bit of paper'." a press secretary of the Games organisation. Mr Brian Close, said. "But people turned up in their thousands at the gates. We couldn’t send them away.” ■ About 10.000 schoolchildren
are included in the opening ceremony, which has been in planning for many months. Accredited news media personnel were permitted to watch-pro-ceedings, but a condition of entry was that no description of content or style be made. Cameras were banned from the stadium from noon, although a number did slip through the net. Photographers were warned that .their accreditation would be cancelled if pictures of the ceremony .were published. The opening ceremony, proper, will be held this Thursday, September 30. ■ ■ /
