Harewood loses N.Z. men’s hockey final

St Luke's, of Auckland, overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Harewood, of Christchurch, 3-2, for the H.W. Smith Trophy in the final of the national inter-club championship at Hobson Park, Auckland, yesterday. It was an exciting game, played on a rain-affected ground, with St Luke’s levelling the scores by half-time and going on to score the winning goal lOmin from the end.

Harewood dominated the early exchanges and deserved the 2-0 lead after 20min. Its goals by Chris Leslie and Pat. Hayde both came after partial clearances from penalty corners. The first of those corners followed a brilliant solo run by Balvant Bhand. Almost immediately St Luke’s replied with a goal from a penalty stroke by Chris Brown and then after a sustained period of pressure Graham Reid equalised with a fine goal from the edge of the circle.

In the second half the St Luke's pressure continued and after Ron Smith, the Harewood goalie, had saved a penalty stroke, Ramesh Patel scored what seemed to be an inevitable goal. A cross from the right corner had been deflected infield from the post. Harewood came back with tremendous spirit in the closing minutes, forcing two penalty corners and creating further chances, but could not score.

Unlike Otago University in the semi-final, St Luke’s managed to contain Hare-

wood’s left-side attack. The St Luke’s right fullback, Mark Smithells, excelled with sure tackling and trapping and the right flank attacking combination of Noel Parkin and David Ross was always a threat, as was the intelligent running of Reid. Harewood’s defence worked tirelessly during long periods under pressure, but
